Divorcing Your Husband? Five Ways To Prepare
Author: FWLGDate: Jan 23 2015
If you are thinking about filing for divorce, or you have already made the decision to do so, it is important to act strategically in order to ensure things go as smoothly as possible. While a divorce is never an easy process, these five strategies will help minimize problems down the road.
1.Collect Financial Records
Regardless of who is the “bread winner” is in the family, or if you split that role evenly, it is important to have all the financial records from your marriage together. This will allow you to see if your spouse started racking up credit card bills after the divorce, or if there is more money than he wanted to let on. Keep these records in a safe location, such as with your attorney, with your parents, or even in a safe deposit box.
2.Have the Cash You Need
When you announce that you want a divorce, your husband may not respond rationally or kindly. Depending on the situation you are in, it may be difficult to keep access to your money, which can make it nearly impossible to move forward. If at all possible, gather together enough money for your attorney and any living expenses you will need to get through the first phases of the divorce.
3.Obtain and Monitor Your Credit Report
While this could technically fall under the “collect financial records” section, it is important enough to state on its own. You need to keep a close eye on your credit to ensure nothing illegal or harmful is being done that could have long lasting impacts. If you have joint credit cards, close the accounts or have your name removed as quickly as possible so that you aren’t harmed by the actions of your spouse.
4.Take an Inventory of Assets
While your financial records will list all the major assets like homes, vehicles, and other items, that is really just the beginning. Go through your home and identify all the assets you have, especially those that are important to you. Things like televisions, computers, art, and more should all be identified. Having pictures of them is ideal.
5.Have a Place to Go
While you don’t want to leave your home if it can be helped (especially without first consulting an attorney), it is important to have your safety, and that of your children, prepared for. If your husband does not react to the request for divorce well, make sure you have somewhere you can stay for at least a few days.
