Our Top 5 Communication Tips!

Author: Olivia Dodd
Date: Jan 12 2024

Establishing effective communication with your divorce attorney is vital for a successful working relationship and minimizing potential misunderstandings that could lead to unnecessary legal expenses. Consider the following tips to enhance your communication with your legal representative:

  1. Clarity and Conciseness:

When discussing your case with your attorney, present all pertinent information in a clear and concise manner. We recommend having an ongoing email or list of questions to send/ ask all at once!

  1. Ask Questions:

Feel free to ask questions if there's anything you find unclear or if you need additional information. A skilled attorney will take the time to explain legal concepts and processes in a way that is comprehensible to you. Asking questions can also contribute to your understanding and enable you to make well-informed decisions.

  1. Record-Keeping:

Maintain a thorough record of all communication with your attorney, including emails, phone calls, and in-person meetings. This organizational practice ensures that you stay well-informed and allows you to follow up on any agreements or action items discussed during your interactions.

  1. Be responsive:

Respond promptly to your attorney's inquiries or requests for information. Timely responses are crucial to avoiding unnecessary delays in your case and preventing your attorney from having to spend additional time following up. Delays can lead to increased legal fees. If you anticipate being unavailable for an extended period, inform your attorney in advance and provide alternative contact information. We understand updates may cause feelings of anxiety, but we’re keeping you informed and often need documents or decisions in a timely manner. Take a deep breath, you will get through this!

  1. Professionalism:

Interact with your attorney in a respectful and professional manner at all times. Remember that your attorney is working on your behalf and has your best interests in mind. Cultivating a professional and respectful relationship can enhance communication and contribute to a more positive overall working experience.
