School is out and lots of families will take trips, do special activities, and spend time together this summer. Here are our top 4 tips for having fun while being safe in the Florida sun this year.
-
Drink plenty of water
- Fun in the sun is very common here in Florida, remember to bring your water bottle to the beach or other summer activities.
- Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to rehydrate, that usually means you’re not drinking enough.
-
Stay cool
- Seek shade and schedule your fun in the sun around the hottest parts of the day- usually between 11am and 3pm.
-
Protect your skin
- Use a sunscreen that has at least 30 SPF and reapply throughout the day, especially if you are swimming in the pool or ocean.
- Wear a hat, sunglasses, and protective clothing, even in the shade!
-
Remember water safety
- Always keep a pair of eyes on your children near pools and other bodies of water
- Sign up for a swim class! Everyone, especially in Florida, should know how to swim
- Check beach conditions before you go! If you ever get caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore until you can reach land instead of directly back to the shore
