When the marriage you entered into with so much hope has died, it may seem in your darkest moments as if the best part of your life is over too. But we’ve worked with thousands of women who have gone through divorce and come out on the other side stronger and more filled with life than ever before. This doesn’t mean that it’s going to be an easy transition, but here are some tips to help you reinvent yourself after divorce.

Accept that it’s going to take a while. Divorce is one of the most traumatic experiences we can undergo, and it’s only natural to feel at a loss for a while. Don’t hesitate to ask for help. Coffee with a friend can do wonders, and a therapist can be an excellent use of your time. We can refer you to some wonderful therapists!

Learn something new. If you’ve always wanted to get in better shape—well, now’s the time to join that yoga class or join the YMCA and take a class yourself while the kids are in theirs!

Do things on your own again. After a long marriage, many women entirely forget what it’s like to go to a movie alone, for example. You may be much better company than your spouse was, and it can be freeing to realize just how much fun you can have on your own.

Start a new project with your kids. Adopt a pet. Take a vacation. Start preparing yourself to launch a business. Play sports together. Look for new opportunities to connect with your kids…you won’t regret it!

As rough as divorce is, it can also be an opportunity to reinvent yourself. It may take longer than you would like, but don’t be surprised if you begin to look at your divorce as a positive experience. Your life is full of endless possibilities, and you have the freedom to explore them. So take advantage!
